In 1957
Soviets sent a dog
named Laika into space
aboard Sputnik 2 –
the first earthling
in orbit ever
She did not
survive the trip
I imagine she barked
in space all alone
jumping at comets
she saw out her window
tail and tongue wagging
until finally subsiding
to a sad whimper dying
closer to heaven than
any had ever attained

Dang. Poor dog, who so loved his buddies, he would even die in space for them.
Alas (sigh). Laika was a street-stray who actually died of overheating just hours into the flight. —CC
(Today’s history lesson was brought to you by Alphabet City, where rhymes have no reason) š
And reason have no rhymes. Poor dog.
very moving
It is a sad story. I understand that there’s a statue of Laika somewhere in Moscow. —CC
This is beautiful and oh-so-heartbreaking!
It is – it’s a wonderful sad story about innocence and existence. Worthy of a screenplay maybe – no? š
Definitely! š
