Not seeing
many hummingbirds
this year maybe
I am opening
the porch door
too abruptly
I miss their hover,
their quizzical gulps
at the feeder
the bubble-up of nectar
when the drinking is sweet
cold and long
And they have so many places to go
in such a hurry they are
all the time
But not this year, at least
not so far
Chagall 2018
I haven’t seen a single one here in northern Virginia yet, either
Maybe they’re getting better at not being seen!
That could be it! I shall look harder 😉
Starting to see them now. Also seeing some miniature ones that look like bees – yellow striped tails – but are definitely birds!
Ought to get a pic of one of those! We had one at the feeder about two days after your poem, but haven’t seen any since then
I will try and get pic. Started using Audubon’s preferred 4:1 recipe (water to sugar) and that appears to be catching their interest.
Cool! I’ll check out that recipe
This is lovely!
Thank you.
