Efficiency

chagall backdrop

Always measure out
what you seek
to boil

Anything more
is waste

Anything less
is short

I’ve got it down
to a spiral
of steam

Two Ships

chagall backdrop

Belly to belly,
a hard drop
on a mogul

thigh to thigh
akimbo dance
in bright light

flesh to flesh
hard slaps
flush and bracing

Palm to palm
we explore
the cushion there

Cheek to cheek
to lips to lips
then tongue to tongue

breath to breath
breathless, out of beat
rushed and laughing

mint
everywhere

Purely Friday

I thank you
for imparting
in me the sense
– the very capacity –
to acknowledge blessings
for which I’d be
thankful

Haiku For Creation

So much life in dirt
tales of yore of gallant deeds
billions per earth’s inch

In February
at Mardi Gras
we ride top-down
we sport our ware
we reflect in moonlight there
where the earth splits
where we drop
off the horizon

At the water’s edge
I’ll confess
I’ll tell her
I’m a snowfall
in Harlem
in streetlamp
to twirl
to the ground

In freefall
I tumble
wildly
like a pollynose
shed from trees
lit in long slants
of sun ray
cold and oblique
to the ground

Enough to tease
but surely not
enough to grow
one gets impatient
to wait for spring
to roll through
time on a promise
wishful to think
more than passion

Some nights
in definite
bold relief
stark engravings
where the lean sight
of you cascades
over me
in ribbons
of perfumed hair

Too fleet
so many things
come and go
too quickly
so much time
stirs yet so
little ado

She

You are
a thousand percent
correct.

No other
woman,
holy or not,
would say that,
I absolutely
agree.

How funny
was that
though?

Bitten

chagall backdrop

Too many people
need a name
for what they’ve got

Otherwise,
what is it?

There’s got to be something
good for whatever
this is

Once upon
a gridlock
dreary

All joy
halted

Seized
and stopped

No longer
sings
beautiful
sine-shaped
melody

Piqued
at odd angles
to harmony

This is what
I’ve got

Can you
cure it?

No matter the cost,
I’ll pay

I hold the best dreams
special for a lost old friend
she seeks us this dawn

My poems
are like cameos

They show up
in your life
every now and then

In profile,
on a bus,
a shadow,
off far away

Lyrics that strike you
on a dare
from the ledge

Where
only
small
foot
steps
keep
you
from
fall

A bridge with your name
Where slow cabs drive lovers home
Early dawn next day
