Good morning Chagall m(eye) Mother taught English at the Ukranian Catholic Highschool in the East Village while Eye attended Cooper Union. According to the Principal Sister Monica m(eye) mother was the best teacher she had ever had. She wrote a letter of recommendation and described Elizabeth Walden Hyde as “the real thing.” St. GEORGES ACADEMY where my mother earned an anual salary of $13,000 commuting from Valley Cottage. She was highly acclaimed by her students.
I know the school and the neighborhood very well. My grandparents were married at St. George’s on E 7th, not far from Cooper Triangle, in 1918. My parents as well, in 1938. Thank you, Joanna, for sharing that story. Wonderful to hear. What years would that have been when she taught there? BTW – St. George’s was a Greek Catholic church and school.
perhaps of interest to you – in Israel, since most people have no concept of the USSR, nor the difference between Ukraine and Russia, all immigrants from the FSU are called “roosim” (meaning: Russians), which is clearly ignorant. it’s also ironic because when they lived in the FSU, they were called “ivreyi” (meaning: Jews), and then when they moved to Israel, they became “roosim”, which they never identified as (neither the ones from Russia, nor the ones from Ukraine).
For near 200 years (more actually, but let’s keep it somewhat contemporary) the people from that region have been struggling with asserting their identities above the political din du jour, whether Austrian-Hungarian, Polish, or Russian, etc., et al, Thank you for your comment. Certainly of interest to hear such things.
