Eulogette

When I would leave for school in the morning,
my mom gave me a tissue for my nose,
a dollar for my lunch, told me to
put the former in one pocket,
the latter in the other, so as
not to lose either

She said so long, never goodbye,
be a good person, never lie,
unless it's bad news, like when
people die, and it makes no sense
for some to know

And always don clean underwear,
for God forbid something should happen
to you along the way, someday you'll
take care of me, she'd say

At times nothing amounts
to something and sometimes
nothing matters

When you are born, God
twists his finger in the center
of your body, your belly button,
exclaims This one's done

She laughs when I ask
how she knew it was me
when I was born

One star for everyone who has ever been,
is here today or will be

I understand now the dream
where she comes to me, kneels
to dip her hand in a pool of water,
lets it cascade down her arm,
over and over, and I ask her if
there is a heaven

She nods her head yes, looks up at me
then adds but everyone here is starving

Never for the last time say so long, nor
for the first time goodbye

Bird Life

We dreamed one day she'd fly,
take wing on air as those before her,
to be born blind and naked, soon she'd be
feathered, clear-eyed, we'd feed her
brilliant neon damselflies,
foraged seed, our mouth to hers,
tough love is good love, until
the wind blows and makes the bough break,
we grip the trunk, she on the ground
agasp amid shattered shells

Undetoured

Though they cover my eyes with the fold,
spin me around, and drop me where
up is down and here is there,
I still find my way
back home

Somnium

I will remember you,
in fields filled with blue night,
into the indigo shadows I go,
vantage for prayer to starlight here,
amid the rustle, the stirred, the quiet grow of grass,
its sweet smell, the freshly mowed,
the same breeze as yesterday today touched
your sculpted alabaster, lucent porceline
aglow in the black, the slight hint of a smile,
of a wink, a sunken dimple, as a neckline pulses
so beats the heart, witness the quivering breast to assess
if that is certain, at rest Love uptakes the air and the blood
it needs to survive, to contract to love again

Overcome by sleep with no dream, afloat atop open eyes,
wider than the horizon's splay, deeper than knowing,
an errant pigment in the iris I cannot brush away, a lash,
without tears to wash clean, the fog of uncertainty
if that is you backlit by the new dawn, haloed in golden ray
at the source of all the days' emanation

I remember you
in fields awash with blue light
