Sandy Jazz

Yesterday’s post – http://wp.me/p3iWfY-u7 – reminded me of this, my own earlier post here on Alphabet City. Hope you enjoy it. —–Chagall

The melody haunts
on the offbeat,
my heart's pulse.

Sad, but hopeful,
maybe.

The fuzzy reeds,
breath through tenors,
piano and bass
both upright shake
sand castles loose
at the turrets.

Doubtful brushes swirl on snares,
precise in ambiguous beat,
more color,
than anything electric.

A young girl,
neon green bikini,
samba prone on her lounger
under ear
buds, to her own muse,
or maybe disposable pop.

Surf rolls.
Hear that oh
so soft brush on cymbal?

Grab it, now hold it,
now fade.

Tonight

the world is light

gypsies stomp around fires

dance atop the heads of devils

breathing

strange jazz

harmonies birth the netherworld

while fingers shape odd chords

syncopated

Summer

sunny samba

toes besiege sand castles

wet steps, frothy, salt water sprays

lovers’

ankles

up her calves, too cool, sun-tanned thighs

coconut-pineapple

oils soothe smooth

the burn

Her soul

refrains the great

songs of her past lifetimes

she’ll rest complete, spent, the coda

a hush,

a poem

recited before the last fire,

upturned faces glowing

all fade away:

her time

convinced that life for one was wrong

I thank god for reality TV
who would otherwise know what’s fantasy
it is our compass to point the Way now
ineffably present akin to Tao

Gertie, I’m Sorry

Maybe it’s merely imagination –
many the writer is starting to sound
profounder, more angled straight to the heart
the crux of matter at the tips of tongues
blinders on to purple prose . . . is a rose . . .

The etiquette of intricate ponder
rounding sharp corners to confront the glimpse
some grammar no stammer add syntax then wax
hi! to haiku, or some form of the day
sonnets – not enough of those . . . is a rose . . .

Perhaps trees are out of season these days
wan starlight has lost its thrall of yore
lovers still in moonbeams kiss,  same old hats
hymns to almighty odes to psalms to gods
to these themes, you’d turn up your nose? . . . a rose.
