New Year’s Eve, I will kiss her at midnight
lips in transition – a reckoning
at the passing between two worlds
and so two times I will kiss her
though I’d be happy with any Wednesday
in May just as well.

Tonight
the world is light
gypsies stomp around fires
dance atop the heads of devils
breathing
strange jazz
harmonies birth the netherworld
while fingers shape odd chords
syncopated
spirit

Not enough gypsies around these days,
too many straights and narrows.
Riffs in overdrive, suck kick-drum air
atop the bass, leave a razor scar,
pop the weasel with a rim-shot snare;
all hail the power trio.
