Today, I witnessed and sensed a small bird’s fear
to have a red-shouldered hawk alight
upon an adjacent branch

I tuned in the mind
of a dog tonight, I think
a Taipei maybe.
Though I can’t be certain
I thought I heard: I love
you now, but back in the day
I swear I’d have eaten you whole.

Like Annie Dillard
I’ve learned to be
still enough so even
birds ignore me, they
settle so close oblivious
to my presence, the more
of this the better I think
– the great divide gone just like that.
Though
there certainly is a food chain.

A gnat evades being smashed
by twenty thousand times its mass
yet keeps coming back for more
Flies in and out of nostrils
with carefree abandon
resides in an eyelid or two
The wind from the blow that would destroy
is sufficient to propel it out of harm’s way
Do consider slow stealth assertion of the finger pad
as the more effective means to transition the gnat
a step back home to the dust
