Crack for the Hummingbird

hummingbird teasing nectar
zips to the lowest pine-bough
and back, can’t keep a secret
there’s two now, one on the perch
the other flapping, fearful to alight
emitting signals that attract
even butterflies

hummingbird versus a cicada-killer wasp
mid-flight, left it bent at the ankles
exponentially faster, oh how it giggled
poof! gone in a puff, already in the canopy
a quick celebration, that nectar rush

hummingbird back, but first a diversion
for those who might be watching too closely
atop the green post in the garden where the asparagus ferns have lengthened,
one mississippi, two missi…

back to the feeder
blessed sugar water

I’m a Blackhawk baby, I’m a whirlybird,
I’m a space invader, I am elevator Wonka

Teaching Humans To Fly

Relax deeply, secure in the updraft, ride the scree,
low in the pocket, let flexible tension arc about you,
buoyancy – wind rushing cilia,
spread under light and sky
in full spanned glory,
a journey upward
to thinner
rarefied
air.

To Soar

As a child I could project myself to the tops of tall trees
I would search out the highest point of the canopy and imagine
The world from that vantage

My wings would ache
To fly down to me
Looking up

Instead I’d turn
My sideways glance
To the sky

As a bird I would project myself to the lowest clouds
I would search out the thinnest white line and imagine
The heavens from that vantage

My wings still ache
From ascension

Looking In

To the birds outside my window today
I am the object behind the screen

Ponder Some

Like Annie Dillard
I’ve learned to be
still enough so even
birds ignore me, they
settle so close oblivious
to my presence, the more
of this the better I think
– the great divide gone just like that.

Though
there certainly is a food chain.

Alight, Nest

So much life
in the vee of that tree
indeed lots astir
at the crotch

Down In The Feather

She fell from the branch
immediately shaping a figure S
then soared on a wing full of air
while I remain here unamused
lacking desire to fly

A small bird flying overhead
determinedly through the wind
high above is tossed she chirps
desperate to be somewhere
